The LAVA Center is thrilled to announce the screening of Antarctica’s first full-length ballet, The McMurdo Nutcracker on Friday, August 14, 7 p.m hosted by one of the director-choreographers, Ash Goverman.
The McMurdo Nutcracker is a celebration of the community and wholeheartedness on the bottom of the planet. The forty-five minute story ballet was created by Ash Goverman, Isa Braun, Clarissa Sprague, and Jaden Pan when they were working as dishwashers at McMurdo Station, Antarctica’s largest scientific research station in 2022. The performers, creative team, and audience were all contract workers accessing the depths of their creativity amidst 60+ hour work weeks.
On August 14, Ash Goverman will describe the creative process for developing The McMurdo Nutcracker before screening this unique, joyful, funny, and beautiful production. Come for dance, laughs, or a peek into the heart of this remote community.

Masks are required and provided for this event, as with all LAVA programming on second Fridays. As we find ourselves in a world where for most of us, medical care is unaffordable, air quality is poor, and there is a growing population of Long Covid survivors and other folks who need or choose to be cautious about airborne pathogens, many have been left behind.
