The LAVA Center is excited to host the Recover Project’s second annual art show, “The Art of Recovery,” on display in September and October as part of National Recovery Month.
National Recovery Month began in 1989 as a national observance during the month of September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.
The Recover Project, located at 68 Federal St. in Greenfield, is a peer-to-peer, welcoming community that supports substance-use recovery by sharing the wisdom of members’ lived experience through the creation of a safe environment. Tapping into the wider peer recovery project nationally and beyond, the Recover Project aims to weave a net of recovery-informed organizations and individuals around Greenfield and Franklin County.
Recovery is a long and sometimes tiresome journey, with a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns. At the Recover Project, they’ve found that art and creative expressions give individuals an avenue to release and express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to articulate.
Indeed, several of the featured artists see the ways in which art calms the mind. Staycee says that “Art can be healing, discovering, loving. Art is spiritual.” Liz turns to art when feeling antsy, as Jason does. Hector reports that, “Like yoga, art takes my mind to another place.”
Timed to coincide with the monthly downtown Art Walk, a “come as you are” gala reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, 5–8 p.m. at the LAVA Center, 324 Main St., Greenfield. Come on down and meet and mingle with these talented and inspiring artists
This programming is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities, with funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
