‘Poetry and Prose from the Heart’ set for Sunday
The LAVA Center and the Center for New Americans will co-host “Poetry and Prose from the Heart: The Tradition of the Latiné Written Word” at The LAVA Center, 324 Main St., on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 3 to 4 p.m.
The presentation and discussion with Alfonso Neal, adjunct professor of Latinx studies at Holyoke Community College, will be a journey through Latin America’s diverse literary culture. According to a LAVA Center press release, participants will read, reflect and discuss the works of influential poets through Latin America and Spain — in their original Spanish language. Folks can also share their own written work. There will be prompts in Spanish to inspire writing.
This presentation and discussion will be primarily in Spanish. English translations can be made available based on the language needs of participants.
‘Healing the Heart’ exhibit on display through December
The LAVA Center at 324 Main St. presents “Healing the Heart,” a community art exhibit curated by K. Kemah Wilson, throughout November and December.
In addition to Wilson, the artwork on display is from Carol Brussel, Maricela Garcia, Karen Lowe and Melinda O’Brien.
In a statement, Wilson recounted how her first art display at The LAVA Center as part of the “Words on Words” exhibit inspired her.
“I thought it was exciting to have my submission be one of the pieces shown. Yet, the actual exhibit far exceeded my expectations. To see my work amongst other artists is a feeling I cannot begin to explain,” she reflected. “On that day, I vowed I would help other artists to experience the exhilaration of seeing their work hung in a gallery. I hope this will help them move forward – creating more art, perfecting their craft and turning their dreams into reality.”
Gallery hours are Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
